Off The Top provides coaches with a step-by-step guide to preparing players to play in the lineout. Coaches should use this resource, alongside relevant age grade law variations to ensure players are prepared correctly for lifting and jumping in the lineout.

All players must be suitably prepared both physically and technically to be able to perform in the lineout. It is therefore important to develop players in a logical fashion, through a staged development programme.

Implementing the essential techniques and skills at an early age will ensure a strong foundation for future development and provide a safe environment for players to engage.

The manual is broken down into five stages:

Stage 1: The Stance

Stage 2: Movement

Stage 3: Jump

Stage 4: Lift

Stage 5: Catch and deliver

Should a player be new to these activities, the coach should ensure that the player is able to demonstrate basic posture and has also practiced in a controlled environment before being asked to lift or jump in a live game.

Off The Top can also be used as an assessment tool as it outlines the progression that the players should undertake in order to perform a lift or jump. Coaches should ensure players are competent at each stage before progressing to the next. If a player does not make it through the assessment (relevant to their age grade law variation), then further training relevant to the experience level of the player should be undertaken.

At all times coaches should ensure that their players are fully aware of the appropriate lineout law variations.
