Disability Rugby

Welcome to the Disability Rugby section of the Hub Officer Education Centre.

The inclusion team provides a unique ability for WRU Hub Officers to not only survive but thrive when working in or with non-traditional rugby environments, groups or individuals. Everyone in Wales deserves an opportunity to play a format of rugby and it's the Inclusion Department's job to provide Hub Officers with the tools to provide that to the best of their ability.

Not only does the Inclusion Department deliver disability specific CPD, but also run Level 1 Wheelchair Rugby courses so all Hub Officers in Wales can access the WRU's 30 Rugby Wheelchairs for delivery in their settings. The HEC will also provide Hub Officers with the resources for coaching SEN/ALN and delivering their own wheelchair rugby sessions.  Furthermore, Hub Officers are asked to support the Disability Strategy by supporting inclusion events from Deaf Rugby, Wheelchair Rugby and the Disability Six Nations / RWC events.

The WRU Inclusion team works across the following areas of focus:

  • Disability
  • Social Isolation
  • Ethnically Diverse Communities
  • LGBTQ+

The WRU’s focus over the last 5 years has been around providing positive rugby experiences for people with disabilities. What we will see going forward is a more cohesive drive to engage people from non-traditional rugby areas or communities, to show that our national sport is for all of our nation.

Due to the breadth of the WRU Hub program, WRU Hub Officers across Wales may operate full time within an ALN provision or may deliver bespoke sessions/lessons to ALN establishments within their school cluster.  Hub Officers employed within ALN schools will deliver a fully ALN provision and support the transition to community outlets such as ICCs (Inclusive Community Clubs) and Mixed Ability Teams. All Hub Officers across our educational provisions will provide support to ALN establishments or groups with the fundamental aim of linking them into the inclusion events and community settings.
