Coaching and refereeing is a great way to be part of the WRU rugby family.

The WRU appreciate the time and commitment people give to support the game, the WRU coaching department offer many opportunities to be involve in the game and to develop your skills in safe and learning environment. Whether through formal courses. Many people get involved whether they are Mum and Dads, ex-players or people that are new to our sport, there will be a place for you all.

The coaching landscape is made up of various courses to support the coach through the development of the player.

The course that supports our players at U7-U8 is the Tag award, a three-hour course that will take you through some practical elements of the game like passing, catching and evasive running and how to develop fun and enjoyment to your sessions in a safe environment.

The next course is for U9-U11 players which is a 12-hour course, this course is about learning the technique of safe tackling and the contest for the ball after the tackle. It also builds on the passing and catching skills of the players. One key element of the course is knowing your players through the parent, player coach triangle which we talk about social skills and behaviours. There is a module on coaching through games which will help players understand the game and deal with different scenarios.

For players from the age of U12 to senior we have the level one course, which is a 12-hour course. This course builds on the fundamentals of the game and looks at the how to coach skills using questioning and listening. These are key skills that are essential for building confidence and self-esteem in players and building on the enjoyment of the game.

The level two course is for coaches who are coaching players from the age of U14 upwards and is a 24-hour course. The course content is based on the technical and tactical elements of the game and building on the how to coach skills. Planning and organisation will be a part of the course and looking to develop session plans over a set period.

The level three course is for coaches who have been coaching for some years, they could be youth, senior and coaches who are coaching within our pathway programme, and are wanting to invest in their coaching, the course is spread over one year through five days of learning. The course builds on the knowledge the coaches have gained over the years. The key modules are Self and others, learning environments, reflection, planning, Game analysis.
